Getting Ready For Winter Your pond: 1. Clean the crud out of your pond 2. Consider whether you want to vacuum out the scum in the bottom of the pond or whether you should drain and clean the pond instead. 3. Clean up around the pond. 4. If you’re in an area with lots of trees, put a netting over your pond to catch the leaves before they fall into your pond. 5. Take a weekly measurement of your water quality. 6. Add beneficial bacteria according to your regular routine until the water temperature dips below 45 degrees. Your fish: 7. Make sure they’re well fed and healthy during the warm months. 8. Switch to a low-protein, high carbohydrate food when the water temperature dips below 5a5 degrees. 9. If you want extra aeration, create a bubbler effect by running a pump that’s placed just below the water surface, not on the bottom. 10. Don’t let the water near the bottom of the pond circulate freely with water that’s closer to the surface. Your plants: 11.Trim back dead foliage and remove spent flowers. 12. Stop fertilizing plants about 3 weeks before average frost date, if in colder locations. 13.Certain plants such as cannas and taros can be left in a cool dark place for a few weeks without any water. 14. Place tropical lilies in the warmest part of the pond or remove for the winter. |
