12"
deep pond in front yard is to shallow for Koi, but gold fish grow to
about 10 inches and do not cloud up water. Plants are potted for easy
removal when cleaning. Dense growth around edge of yard eliminate quick
easy access to and from the street area which prevent youngsters from
running in and out. They have to walk up the drive, and enter pond area
through walkways, which tend to cut down on the rough housing.
Most of this pond is shaded by a large orange tree. Koi, and Gold fish
both love oranges, so when one falls into the pond, all you find is a
well cleaned peal.
Pond:
4-6 feet wide 10 inches deep the are sides raised about 18" above ground
Size: circumference, 60 feet
modified y shape
concrete block construction with concrete bottom
surface, pebble tec
two small sub pumps
Bird feeder located over pond in orange tree to eliminate droppings.
Toiler leveler for auto fill.
Small bird house in tree is usually occupied, doves and wrens very
active in pond.
Birds have a hard time perching in citrus trees due to density of
foliage. Thus birds fly into feeder directly and do not perch on bencher
around pond making a mess. Some mess on sides of pond where birds land
to hop to small islands (frog on left sits on one) I'm still working on
the critter habitat. Did not have the problem until I put the small
islands in the pond.
Problems:
No built in drain. Harder to clean with partial draining.
Power cords visible. (did not make entry way through pond wall.)
Shallow: Code requires under 13 inches in unfenced front yard. Koi, murk
up the water,
Catfish, blue gills, and some of the more active fish jump out.
Raised pond provides nice sitting area, but animals like turtles, and
fish cannot get
back in when they get out.
Some problems with neighborhood boys playing unsupervised, but nothing
serious. |
